月 物 語 – Description

Scenes of “a picture” based on Blue color

■ Description

It is the moon of the middle autumn, which was used to be ovsereved and celebrated by Japanese. I thought it will be a good subject by hearing the story in the Basho memorial hall, visited last time. They said, Basho, he also once participated in the moon ceremony, and enjoyed special dinner, called Dengaku.

However, for those of us living in the present age, “observation of the moon” may be to access a website where photos taken all the way to the back side by satellite are published. The photos taken from the surface of the earth are not very significant, and our “moon photography project” changes into a story of synthesizing a huge moon taken as a material against the background of a castle or something.

That is why I set Kyoto as the shooting location, the stage of the old fairy tale ‘Princess Kaguya’ as a usual countermeasure. It was a fun walk through east to the west of the city to take such images.

‘Princess Kaguya’ is one of the oldest surviving stories in Japan. Nevertheless, I feel something is wrong from the place where the Moon person who is a spacenoid is the main character. It is such an eccentric story; she was born in the Earth by mistake, grew up being requested by the highest power of the time, refused it, and returned to her hometown, the Moon. I’d say, then, how about the story ends like this -“princess married to the prince of the sea and they lived happily ever after, in NewYork”?

But if you look back, you can see that the story of the moon is still the source and inspiration for various works. “Kaguya-sama: Love is War”is a direct quote, and “Sailor Moon” where the reincarnation of the moonling is active on the earth is also the variation. If you considered her sex was turned to be male, you could feel the influence even on Goku of “Dragon Ball”.

It probably has to do with apollo 11 landing on the moon in 1969. When Captain Armstrong, wearing a space suit, said, “This is a small step for one man, but a great step for mankind,” the moon probably changed from a romantic being wrapped in a mysterious veil to a realistic land to be pioneered. It could be said it was a kind of commoditization of the moon.

Therefore, based on the “commoditized moon” story, the main characters of each stories show various growth and overcome environments. After the period of high economic growth has changed into the era of mass consumption, it was one of the reasons they were accepted with sympathy in Japan (and all over the world) in my opinion.

Meanwhile, as is well known, the Apollo project was postponed after humanity lost interest in the moon, and conspiracy theories were whispered because of the suspicion of truth. I mean, it seemed the veil to be closed again… even the photograph taken as it is now feels attractive to me.

Let’s shoot the moon again, shall we?
